Twenty one of the 44 rivers in Kerala is polluted and water quality in these rivers are under constant monitoring of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the State Pollution Control Board.
As per CPCB report of September 2018, 351 polluted river stretches were identified in terms of Bio-chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels, an indicator of organic pollution. Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Social Justice and Empowerment Rattan Lal Katari said this in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on March 8.
NRCP
The Minister said that the Centre always supplemented the efforts of the state governments and Union territories in cleaning and rejuvenation of rivers. He said that National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) and Namami Gange projects helped in giving a new life to rivers.
The NRCP covered 34 rivers in 77 towns spread over 16 States in the country with a cost of Rs. 5965.90 crore. He said that sewage treatment capacity of 2522.03 million litres per day (mld) was also created. Under Namami Gange programme, a total of 335 projects was sanctioned at a cost of Rs.29,578 crore so far. Out of 335 projects, 156 projects are in the sewerage sector for creation of total sewage treatment capacity of 4867mld, and sewerage network of 5066 kms.
AMRUT
In addition, sewerage infrastructure is created under programs like Atal Mission for Rejuvenation & Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Smart Cities Mission of Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, the minister pointed out.
He noted that the government took several to stop discharge of industrial effluents into rivers.
