India is planning to introduce an “Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry” (APAAR) ID for all school students, both in government and private schools, as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Here’s an overview of what the APAAR ID is and how it will work:

WHAT IS APAAR ID?

The Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID is a unique identity number for all school students in India. It will be an additional identity to the Aadhaar ID that every student already has. The ID is intended to be a lifelong ID number that tracks students’ academic journey and achievements from pre-primary to higher education.

PURPOSE

APAAR is designed to simplify education and reduce the need for students to carry physical documents. It aims to streamline the education system and reduce fraud and duplicate educational certificates. It will provide a single, trusted reference for educational institutions. APAAR will also serve as a gateway to Digilocker, allowing students to digitally store important documents and achievements, such as exam results and report cards, for easy access in the future, such as for higher education or employment.

HOW IT WORKS

Each individual will have a unique APAAR ID linked to the Academic Bank Credit (ABC), a digital repository containing information about the credits earned by students during their academic journey. When students complete a course or achieve something, it is digitally certified and securely stored in their account by authorized institutions. If a student changes schools, whether within the state or to another state, their data in the ABC will be transferred to the new school by sharing the ID, eliminating the need for physical documents or transfer certificates.

Registration: To create an APAAR ID, students will need to provide basic information such as name, age, date of birth, gender, and a photograph. This information will be verified using their Aadhar number.

The introduction of the APAAR ID is part of the government’s efforts to modernize and digitize the education system, making it more efficient and student-friendly.
