Scientists are baffled by the size and orientation of this unprecedented coronal hole, wider than 60 Earths, challenging the norms of the current solar cycle.

The colossal coronal hole, akin to a celestial void, emerged near the sun’s equator on Dec. 2, expanding at an astonishing rate to a width surpassing 497,000 miles within 24 hours. Since December 4, this cosmic void has been pointed directly at our planet, sparking intrigue and concern among scientists.
DARK HOLE; CORONAL HOLES UNVEILED
Coronal holes, the cosmic enigmas behind this celestial drama, manifest when the sun’s magnetic fields unexpectedly open up, releasing solar wind into space. Visible as dark patches due to their cooler and less dense nature, these phenomena are distinguishable in ultraviolet light, posing a unique challenge for solar observers.
GEOMAGNETIC STORM POTENTIAL
The solar winds from coronal holes, faster than regular solar wind, have the potential to trigger disturbances in Earth’s magnetic shield, resulting in geomagnetic storms. Initial predictions hinted at a moderate (G2) storm, capable of causing radio blackouts and dazzling auroras.
