Tea and Haritaki, which is commonly called Harad, is claimed to have the potential to act as therapeutic options against Coronavirus infection. A new study by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, has claimed this.
The IIT study also claimed that ‘Gallotannin’ (tannic acid) was also a potential candidate against coronavirus. The claims of the IIT with respect to the herbs are yet to be proved and with trials.
Professor Ashok Kumar Patel, who led the study, was quoted as saying that the medicinal plants would give a cost effective therapeutic option against deadly disease.
The study was conducted by the IIT’s Kusuma School of Biological Sciences (KSBS). They examined about 51 medicinal plants on 3CLProprotease (3-chymotrypsin-like protease) of the virus. This is needed for processing viral polyproteins. The researchers believed that targeting this protein may be able to halt the replication of the virus.
Noting that Indian medicinal plants had a vast repository of bioactive components for combating several diseases, Dean, Research and Development, S K Khare said that the tea had a larger benefit in giving relief to corona conditions. He said that their study had revealed the effect of tea in inhibiting the coronavirus protease.
