Head of State; Women ’s Underrepresentation a Stark Reality

Despite notable progress, women continue to be largely excluded from positions of power and diplomacy worldwide. According to UN Women’s global data on Women Political Leaders 2024, the highest levels of influence and decision-making remain predominantly occupied by men.

LIMITED FEMALE LEADERSHIP WORLDWIDE

A staggering 113 countries have never had a woman serve as Head of State or Government. As of today, only 26 countries are led by women. Furthermore, as of January 1, 2024, only 23% of ministerial positions are held by women. In 141 countries, they make up less than a third of Cabinet ministers, and seven countries have no represention in their Cabinets at all.

MALE DOMINANCE IN DIPLOMACY

Male dominance extends to the diplomatic arena, particularly in the Permanent Missions to the UN. As of May 2024, women held only 25% of Permanent Representative posts in New York, 35% in Geneva, and 33.5% in Vienna.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FEMALE LEADERSHIP

UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous emphasizes the critical need for female leadership. “Our work is guided by the belief that when they lead, the world is better for all people and the planet. As many countries head to the polls this year, we all must put women first, at the pinnacle of power, where and when it matters the most. Women’s equal participation in governance and leadership is key to improving lives for all.”

POLITICAL WILL FOR GENDER EQUALITY

Electing and appointing women to leadership positions signals strong political will for gender equality. It demonstrates a collective commitment to tackling today’s global challenges. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most progressive blueprint for advancing women’s rights, UN Women continues to advocate for woman to lead and thrive, particularly in the most senior positions of power.

UN WOMEN’S CONTINUED EFFORTS

UN Women works tirelessly to ensure that woman occupy leadership roles, shaping and driving positive change globally. The organization’s efforts are vital in promoting gender equality and empowering them to influence critical decisions that affect societies worldwide.

Despite strides towards gender equality, they remain significantly underrepresented in global decision-making roles. The data underscores the urgent need for increased female participation in leadership to create a more equitable and effective governance landscape. As the world prepares to mark 30 years since the Beijing Declaration, the push for women’s leadership remains as crucial as ever.
