This mosque, also known as Nainar Mosque, is not just a place of worship but a symbol of unity where followers of different faiths converge in absolute concord.
PILGRIMAGE DESTINATION FOR ALL
Vavarambalam holds a special significance during the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage, one of the world’s most significant religious journeys. Devotees, irrespective of their religious background, visit this mosque as a sacred prelude to the demanding trek to the Ayyappa deity. It is a unique sight to witness pilgrims, cutting across religious barriers, walking around the mosque with utmost devotion, making offerings, and breaking coconuts.
THE LEGEND OF VAVAR
Legend has it that Vavar, a close companion of Lord Ayyappa, played a crucial role in the mythology. Following the slaying of the demon princess Mahishi, Lord Ayyappa requested Vavar to stay in Erumely. Pilgrims pay a visit to Vavar at the Vavarambalam before embarking on their journey to the Sannidhanam, showcasing the deep-rooted connection between different religious communities.
RICH HISTORY AND TRADITION
With a history spanning over 500 years, the mosque is situated between Valiyambalam and Cheriyambalam. The Chandanakudam procession of Vavar mosque is renowned, attracting devotees from various parts of the country. This is followed by Pettathullal, a ritualistic dance performed by devotees celebrating the victory of good over evil. Starting from Cheriyambalam, the procession proceeds to Vavarambalam, creating a vibrant atmosphere of devotion and celebration.
ERUMELY PETTATHULLAL: A CELEBRATORY SPECTACLE
The Erumely Pettathullal is a captivating spectacle where devotees smear their bodies with colors and dance in a celebratory mood. This ritualistic dance symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and is a vibrant expression of communal joy.
TOURIST ATTRACTION
Beyond the realm of religious significance, Vavarambalam attracts tourists from far-off places who come to witness the shining example of unity among communities. The mosque becomes a focal point for cultural exchange and a living embodiment of Kerala’s ethos of inclusivity.
In essence, Vavarambalam stands not just as a place of worship but as a beacon of communal harmony, inviting people to embrace diversity and celebrate the shared spirit of devotion.
