HISTORY
This town derives its name from its historical founder, Vallabha II of the Mooshika dynasty (Kolathiri family). Originally known as Vallabha-Pattanam, it served as the capital during the medieval ages. Ibn Battuta’s fourteenth-century account mentions the ruler of Ezhimala residing at Baliapatanam, indicating a shift in political authority. Abraham Ben Yiju, a Jewish merchant from the 1230s, may have referred to ‘Budfattan,’ possibly Valapattanam. In the sixteenth century, Portuguese official Duarte Barbosa notes Baliapatanam (Baliapatam) as the residence of the ‘king of Cannanore.
