THE NAME ‘SURYANELLI’

The name ‘Suryanelli’ has a fascinating origin, combining two words – ‘Suryan,’ meaning ‘sun’ in Sanskrit, and ‘Illai,’ meaning ‘no’ in Tamil. Together, they convey the concept of ‘No Sun.’ In ancient times, Suryanelli served as a crucial passage to the sacred Sabarimala shrine. The densely packed trees created a natural canopy, shielding the ground from sunlight.

ELEVATION AND CLIMATE

Perched at an elevation of 1,412 meters (4,633 feet) above sea level in the southern Western Ghats, Suryanelli experiences heavy rainfall and maintains a pleasantly temperate climate throughout the year. However, temperatures can drop significantly when strong winds prevail, adding a touch of coolness to the air.

NATURAL WONDERS AND WATERWAYS

Suryanelli is blessed with a network of streams and rivers, enhancing its natural beauty. While some waterways may run dry during peak summer months, the waterfalls near the Chinnakanal power station remain perennial, ensuring a continuous flow of water.

BREATHTAKING VIEWS AND WILDLIFE

Located about 40 km from Munnar town, Suryanelli offers a pristine view of the Anayirangal Dam. Positioned at the centre of a delicate ecosystem, surrounded by reserve forests, the area provides a sanctuary for critically endangered species such as the Nilgiri Tahr, Tigers, Asian Elephants, Red Squirrels, and diverse avian species.
