Parenting can be challenging at any age. but for Wisdom, a 74-year-old Laysan Albatross, it’s a feat that continues to amaze scientists. Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, is incubating another egg. This event takes place on Midway Atoll, a remote wildlife refuge near Hawaii.
Wisdom has been a regular visitor to Midway Atoll for decades. Since being tagged in 1956, she has laid over 50 eggs. For most of her life, Wisdom nested with the same mate, as Laysan Albatrosses are monogamous by nature. Yet, her partner has not been seen for years, and Wisdom has recently been observed bonding with new companions.
This year, Wisdom and her new partner are sharing incubation duties, a hopeful sign for the survival of their egg. Jonathan Plissner, a wildlife biologist at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, expressed optimism: “We are hopeful that the egg will hatch.”

Laysan Albatrosses typically live up to 40 or 50 years. This lifespan far surpasses that of smaller birds, which often last only a few years. Wisdom’s longevity is extraordinary, not just among her species but in the avian world overall.

Laysan Albatrosses are known for their vast wingspans, which can reach up to 80 inches (203 centimeters). These seabirds travel more than 930 miles (1,500 kilometers) to forage for food, demonstrating remarkable endurance.
