Metabolic health significantly impacts aging men. Specifically, blood sugar increases drive changes in reproductive systems. This also affects sexual functioning in older men. These findings were presented at ENDO 2025.
The Endocrine Society’s annual meeting took place in San Francisco, California. This research challenges long-held beliefs about aging.
THE ROLE OF METABOLIC HEALTH FACTORS
Dr. Michael Zitzmann, a professor at University Hospital in Muenster, Germany, led the study. Dr. Zitzmann noted that age and testosterone were previously considered the main factors. However, the study indicates a stronger correlation with metabolic changes. Modest increases in blood sugar are key drivers.
This new understanding offers hope. Men can take steps to preserve their reproductive health. Lifestyle choices and medical interventions are effective. They can even revive declining sexual health.
INSIGHTS FROM A LONG-TERM STUDY
The research involved a long-term study. It included healthy men aged 18 to 85. The study began in 2014 with 200 participants. It concluded in 2020 with 117 participants. Researchers tracked several factors over time. They monitored semen and hormonal profiles. They also assessed erectile functioning. Additionally, they studied metabolic health factors like BMI and blood sugar levels.
KEY FINDINGS ON BLOOD SUGAR AND FUNCTION
Hormone levels and semen parameters remained largely normal. However, sperm movement declined over time. Furthermore, erectile function decreased in men with elevated blood sugar. These levels were below the diabetes threshold (6.5% HbA1c).
While testosterone levels correlated with libido, they did not directly impact erectile function. This confirms the primary role of metabolic factors.
IMPLICATIONS FOR MALE SEXUAL HEALTH
The study provides vital information for doctors. It helps them create effective male sexual health maintenance plans. Dr. Zitzmann expressed optimism regarding these findings.
“We now know that it’s in our power to retain sexual and reproductive wellbeing in men,” Dr. Zitzmann stated. This remains true even as men age. Focusing on metabolic health factors offers a clear path forward. Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is essential for aging men’s health.
