Can AI Predict Your Death?

A new survey reveals nearly 3 in 4 American teens use AI companions regularly, despite growing concerns about mental health risks

Trained on the life stories of over a million individuals from Denmark, this life2vec AI model exhibits unparalleled accuracy in predicting not only the course of individuals’ lives but also their risk of premature death.

UNDERSTANDING THE AI’S TRAINING

life2vec was meticulously trained on a vast dataset encompassing health and labour market information of 6 million Danes spanning from 2008 to 2020. This comprehensive dataset included details such as education, medical visits, diagnoses, income, and occupation. The researchers transformed this wealth of data into words, shaping a sophisticated language model akin to the technology powering AI applications like ChatGPT.

UNPRECEDENTED PREDICTIVE ACCURACY

Upon mastering the intricate patterns within the data, life2vec surpassed existing AI models in predicting outcomes, including personality traits and, remarkably, the time of death. In a specific test group aged 35 to 65, where half had passed away between 2016 and 2020, life2vec’s predictions exhibited an astounding 11% greater accuracy than any other AI model or the methodologies employed by life insurance companies.

SCIENTIFIC EXCITEMENT AND ETHICAL CONCERNS

While the accuracy of predictions is noteworthy, the study’s lead author, Sune Lehman, emphasizes the excitement lies not only in the predictions but in understanding the underlying data aspects enabling such precision. However, ethical considerations loom large. Lehman cautions against using the model for insurance purposes, highlighting the core principle of insurance in sharing the uncertainty of unforeseen events.

AI SAFEGUARDS AND ETHICAL DILEMMAS

As the study raises ethical concerns, it prompts a broader discussion on the responsible deployment of AI technologies. Lehman emphasizes that life2vec should not find its place in insurance practices, emphasizing the need for ethical safeguards to prevent misuse and uphold societal values.

The unveiling of life2vec marks a significant leap in AI capabilities, pushing the boundaries of predictive accuracy. As society grapples with the marvels and ethical implications of such advanced technology

, the study serves as a call to action for establishing robust safeguards to ensure responsible and ethical use of AI in shaping our understanding of the future.
