Five-Year Strategic Plan to Global Migration Challenges

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) launches a comprehensive five-year strategic plan, addressing challenges posed by climate change, conflict, and inequality. Explore the plan's goals, including saving lives, addressing displacement, and facilitating regular migration

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has unveiled its ambitious five-year global strategic plan, aiming to fulfill the commitment of ensuring safe, orderly, and regular migration while providing support to the world’s most vulnerable populations.

A PLAN FOR GLOBAL IMPACT

Developed through extensive internal consultations, including dialogues with migrants, Member States, and UN agencies, the plan is set to guide IOM’s activities until 2028. The organization, led by Director General Amy Pope, emphasizes the overwhelming evidence that migration benefits communities worldwide. However, challenges like climate change, conflict, and inequality necessitate a comprehensive approach.

OVERARCHING GOALS OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN

  • Saving Lives and Protecting People on the Move: This underscores IOM’s humanitarian commitment, focusing on ensuring the safety and well-being of migrants globally.
  • Driving Solutions to Displacement: Leveraging data and expertise, IOM aims to proactively address crises, reducing the widening and expensive impacts of displacement.
  • Facilitating Pathways for Regular Migration: Creating safer and more orderly migration options to dismantle incentives for smuggling, trafficking, exploitation, and abuse.

ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE AS A TOP DRIVER

Recognizing climate change as a primary driver of migration, IOM’s strategic plan places a significant emphasis on reducing associated risks and impacts. Aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the plan emphasizes migration’s integral role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

LAUNCHING IN CHAD: A NATION FACING COMPLEX MIGRATION TRENDS

Chad, grappling with complex migration trends, served as the launch pad for the strategic plan. The nation faces challenges exacerbated by conflict in neighbouring Sudan, resulting in the displacement of over 7 million people. Climate change and entrenched poverty further amplify this humanitarian crisis, highlighting the need for global attention.

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR GLOBAL CHALLENGES

Built on IOM’s 70-plus years of experience, the strategic plan incorporates innovative thinking and technology to assist migrants, their families, communities, and societies. Director General Amy Pope emphasizes the plan’s adaptability, ensuring IOM continues to excel in helping people in need.

A GLOBAL ISSUE DEMANDING GLOBAL SOLUTIONS

“There is not a corner of the globe that is not touched by, or is in some way invested in, the issue of migration,” notes DG Pope. The new Strategic Plan positions IOM to address present and future challenges, allowing the organization to fulfill its core mission of aiding those in need.
