When visiting Kochi, one destination that undoubtedly captures the attention of travellers is the awe-inspiring Arikal Falls. Nestled within the Pampakuda Panchayat of the Ernakulam district, this remarkable natural phenomenon beckons adventurers to embark on a 2.5-kilometer journey along Vettimudu road from the Kakur Koorapilly junction on the Piravam-Koothattukulam road.
WATER FLOWS DOWN TOWERING ROCKS
The captivating Areekal stream waterfall awaits, where water gracefully descends from a towering rock formation. During rainy periods, the falls exude enhanced power, yet as the rain subsides, their cascade assumes a more delicate demeanour. Plunging approximately 130 feet from the eastern hills onto the dark rock structures below, the falls create an utterly breathtaking sight, inviting visitors to engage in an immersive encounter.
What sets Arikal Falls apart is its notably low accident risk, a feature that draws families and wanderers from distant places to revel in its scenic beauty. This enchanting natural spectacle resides at Piramadam, the confluence of three to six wards within the Pampakuda Panchayat. Originating from the Mandalam Mountain in the South, the Koorapilly Mountain in the East, and the Kolpavara in the North, the waters converge to form the captivating Arikal waterfall. Arikal Falls has not only bestowed natural beauty upon the region but also provided economic sustenance for Pampakuda, a rural expanse cantered around agriculture, as the village thrives on the popularity the falls bring.
The path leading to the falls is equipped with accessible steps, catering to individuals with mobility challenges. A small footbridge further enhances the overall experience. During holidays, the spectacle draws approximately five thousand visitors, with viewing hours spanning from 8 am to 6 pm. An entry fee of Rs. 20 is applicable, excluding children below the age of ten.
For travellers traversing the Ernakulam-Koothattukulam route, a mere three-kilometre journey from the Kakur Koorapilly junction leads to this captivating destination. Visitors from western areas and Muvattupuzha can access Arikal Falls by covering a distance of two and a half kilometres along the Mannathur road from Pampakuda Papukakkavala.
AN OASIS BEYOND: KOCHARIKAL
Merely two kilometres away from Areekal, lays the equally captivating Kocharikal. This favoured spot presents a verdant landscape, an alluring cave, and a serene lake, making it an attractive extension of the Arikal Falls experience. Entry to Kocharikal is open and free for all, allowing travellers to further immerse themselves in the natural wonders that this region of Kochi has to offer.
