In a groundbreaking move, Tamil Nadu has taken proactive measures to protect its wild elephants by implementing an innovative AI-based surveillance system. This pioneering pilot project, launched in Madhukkarai, west of Coimbatore, seeks to avert tragic elephant fatalities resulting from collisions with trains on railway tracks.
The project, with a budget of Rs 7.2 crore involved the installation of 12 surveillance towers equipped with thermal and standard cameras. These towers have been strategically positioned along the railway tracks, covering both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ lines.
EARLY DETECTION AND PREVENTION
The thermal imaging cameras mounted on the towers serve as a critical tool for the early detection of elephant movements near the tracks. The collected data is transmitted in real-time to an on-site control room.
In the control room, the data is processed and promptly relayed to train operators, loco-pilots, through calls and SMS, enabling them to take immediate precautionary measures.
EXPANSION PLANS
This pioneering initiative aims to achieve “zero elephant deaths” on railway tracks in the area. Subsequently, the project is set to expand to cover a more extensive and vulnerable region in its next phase.
The innovative AI-powered surveillance system marks a significant step forward in ensuring the safety of wild elephants and highlights the power of technology in conserving India’s diverse wildlife.
