In a momentous move towards strengthening India’s space sector and encouraging private industry participation, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has transferred its state-of-the-art IMS-1 Satellite Bus Technology to Alpha Design Technologies Pvt. Ltd. NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO’s commercial arm, with the aim of propelling the growth of the private space sector and fostering technological self-reliance, facilitated the transfer.
THE IMS-1 SATELLITE BUS
A Versatile Platform for Low-Cost Access to Space, the IMS-1 satellite bus, developed by the U R Rao Satellite Centre, is a versatile and efficient small satellite platform specifically designed to provide affordable access to space. It functions as a dedicated vehicle for various payloads, enabling a wide range of missions, including Earth imaging, ocean and atmospheric studies, microwave remote sensing, and space science research. One of the standout features of the IMS-1 bus is its ability to ensure a quick turnaround time for satellite launches, making it an attractive option for cost-effective missions.
KEY SPECIFICATIONS OF THE IMS-1 SATELLITE BUS
Weighing approximately 100 kg, the IMS-1 bus has the capacity to accommodate a 30 kg payload. Its solar arrays generate 330 W power with a raw bus voltage ranging from 30-42 V. The bus is equipped with a 3-axis stabilised system that utilizes four reaction wheels and a 1 N thruster, providing exceptional pointing accuracy. This advanced technology has already proven its capabilities in previous Missions, including IMS-1, Youthsat, and Microsat-2D, and serves as a precursor to the more sophisticated IMS-2 bus technology.
FUELING INDIA’S TECHNOLOGICAL SELF-RELIANCE IN SPACE
The decision to transfer ISRO’s IMS-1 Satellite Bus Technology to private industries marks a significant shift in India’s approach to space exploration. By enabling private players to harness this cutting-edge technology, ISRO aims to propel India’s industrial growth in the space sector and foster technological self-reliance. This strategic move not only encourages the involvement of private enterprises in space research and exploration but also aligns with India’s vision of establishing a stronger presence in the global space market.
PROMOTING PRIVATE INDUSTRY PARTICIPATION IN INDIA’S SPACE SECTOR
The transfer of ISRO’s IMS-1 Satellite Bus Technology is a significant step towards enhancing private industry participation in India’s space sector. By encouraging collaboration between government agencies and private enterprises, India paves the way for innovation and growth, fostering a competitive environment that will drive advancements in space technology.
ALPHA DESIGN TECHNOLOGIES
Alpha Design Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (ADTL), the recipient of the IMS-1 Satellite Bus Technology, is a company renowned for its expertise in engineering, manufacturing, and system integration. With this technology transfer, ADTL is poised to make a substantial contribution to India’s space research and exploration endeavours. The collaboration between ISRO and ADTL signifies the advancement of India’s space capabilities and reinforces the country’s determination to become a major player in the global space industry.
The transfer of the IMS-1 Satellite Bus Technology from ISRO to Alpha Design Technologies represents a landmark achievement in India’s space journey. This collaboration opens up new horizons for the private space sector, allowing it to play an instrumental role in space research, exploration, and development.
