Located within the Museum and Zoo campus in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the masterpieces of India’s most revered artist, Raja Ravi Varma. The gallery spans an impressive 12,000 square feet. It houses 134 works, including oil paintings, oleographs, and pencil sketches. These pieces offer visitors an in-depth look at the legacy of this legendary figure.
Raja Ravi Varma was born on April 29, 1848, in the Kilimanoor palace of Travancore. He is renowned for his stunning portrayal of Indian mythology and portraits. His work blends European techniques with traditional Indian themes. His work continues to influence Indian art and visual culture. The gallery showcases a wide array of his works. These were previously displayed in the Sree Chitra Art Gallery. Now, they are housed separately in this modern facility.
The gallery’s most prized possessions include 46 paintings, 14 oleographs, and 16 pencil sketches. Each piece is a testament to his skill and visionary artistry. These works include some of Ravi Varma’s most culturally significant pieces, which have left a lasting impact on Indian art.
PRESERVING A CULTURAL LEGACY
In addition to the paintings, the gallery also displays certificates that Ravi Varma received in 1893 from Chicago and Vienna for his works sent from Kilimanoor Palace. This honors the artist’s international recognition during his lifetime. The oil paintings on display were generously donated by Kilimanoor Palace in 1935. This donation ensures that Ravi Varma’s contributions to Indian art are preserved for generations.
The gallery is also home to works by Ravi Varma’s siblings, C. Raja Raja Varma and Mangala Bai Thampuratti. Their contributions further expand the collection and add depth to the artistic legacy of the Varma family.
