The UN migration agency, IOM, has sounded an alarm, revealing that one in three migrant deaths occurs during flight from conflict. Shockingly, more than two in three documented migrant deaths remain unidentified, according to the report “A Decade of Documenting Migrant Deaths.”
A GRIM RECORD: 2023’S DEADLY LEGACY
The past year marked the deadliest on record, with a staggering 8,541 migrant victims. Tragically, nearly 60 percent of these deaths were attributed to drowning. As the world grapples with these grim statistics, 2024 paints an equally ominous picture.
ALARMING TRENDS OF 2024
Despite a decrease in arrivals along the Mediterranean Sea route this year, with only 16,818 recorded compared to 26,984 in the same period last year, the number of deaths remains disturbingly high. Since January 1st, 956 deaths have been registered, highlighting the ongoing crisis.
UNIDENTIFIED AND UNDERREPORTED
IOM’s report emphasizes the persistently high number of unidentified deaths, leaving families and communities in anguish over the fate of their loved ones. Shockingly, the remains of 26,666 migrants who perished while migrating remain unrecovered, underscoring the magnitude of this humanitarian crisis.
A CALL FOR SAFE PATHWAYS
More than one in three deceased migrants hail from conflict-ridden countries or regions with significant refugee populations. This grim reality underscores the perils faced by those fleeing conflict without access to safe migration routes. The Central Mediterranean emerges as the deadliest route, claiming the lives of at least 23,092 individuals since 2014.
TURNING DATA INTO ACTION
Urgent action is imperative to address this humanitarian crisis. Ugochi Daniels, IOM Deputy Director General for Operations, advocates for comprehensive data collection to inform the creation of safer migration routes. The recent findings underscore the need for collaborative efforts to prevent migrant deaths and alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations.
A PATH FORWARD: IOM’S STRATEGIC PLAN 2024-2028
In response to this pressing issue, IOM has launched a new Strategic Plan aiming to save lives and protect people on the move. This initiative calls for concerted efforts from nations and partners worldwide to end migrant deaths and mitigate the profound impacts of this crisis on migratory routes globally.
