Esports, once a niche interest, has exploded into a multi-million-dollar industry with a massive global following. However, beneath its glamorous surface lies a troubling reality: cyberbullying and sexual harassment are rampant, particularly affecting women players.
A recent study by University of South Australia (UniSA) sheds light on the pervasive issues within esports. Conducted by Louise Trudgett-Klose and Dr. Sarven McLinton, the study surveyed 145 players across 14 countries, revealing alarming statistics. Nearly all participants reported experiencing cyberbullying in the past year, with a significant portion targeted by sexual harassment.
VULNERABILITY OF WOMEN IN ESPORTS
Despite comprising 46% of the global gaming community, women in professional esports face disproportionate levels of abuse. The study found that as players gain prominence, they become more susceptible to hostile behaviors, severely impacting their mental health.
TYPES OF ABUSE
Cyberbullying in esports ranges from name-calling and exclusion tactics to verbal threats and manipulative behaviors. Sexual harassment includes unsolicited explicit messages, images, and inappropriate comments, creating a toxic environment for players.
The esports culture, dominated by hyper-masculine norms and targeting heterosexual men, leaves those outside this demographic vulnerable. Professionals, often independent contractors, lack institutional protections, exacerbating their exposure to abuse.
CALL FOR CHANGE AND SUPPORT
Dr. McLinton emphasizes the urgent need for new strategies to safeguard players’ mental health and foster a safer gaming environment. Initiatives like UniSA’s HIGHER research group aim to explore and address these issues comprehensively.
As esports continues to grow, addressing cyberbullying and sexual harassment is crucial for its sustainability and ethical integrity. By confronting these challenges head-on, the industry can ensure a more inclusive and supportive environment for all participants.
FUTURE RESEARCH DIRECTIONS
UniSA’s ongoing research into esports spans various critical areas, including mental health, gender equity, online safety, and the impact of emerging technologies. These efforts are pivotal in shaping a healthier and more inclusive future for esports professionals and enthusiasts alike.
