Around 53% of U.S. adults claim to have interacted with a deceased family member, either in dreams or other forms, according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Centre. Additionally, within the past year, 34% felt the presence of a deceased relative, 28% communicated with them about their life, and 15% received communication from the deceased.
The study delves into the prevalence of such experiences, the religious and gender-related factors influencing them, and the diverse interpretations that individuals may have.
GENDER AND RELIGION
Women are more likely than men to report these interactions. Individuals with moderate religious affiliation are more prone to experiencing interactions than those who are highly religious or not religious.
RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND
While over half of Catholics (66%) and historically Black Protestants (67%) have experienced interactions, the rate is lower among evangelical Protestants (42%) and unaffiliated individuals (48%). Moderately religious individuals are more likely to report these experiences compared to those with higher or lower religious commitment levels.
RECENT EXPERIENCES
In the past year, 46% of respondents have been visited by a deceased family member in a dream, while 31% have experienced interactions in other forms.
INTERPRETATION AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
The study highlights the diversity in interpretations of these interactions. While the survey did not inquire about explanations, it acknowledges the possibility of a wide spectrum of viewpoints. Some may perceive these experiences as supernatural or mysterious, while others might attribute them to natural causes. The survey also underlines the ethical concerns related to consent, psychological impact, and potential subtle pressures within familial relationships.
The Pew Research Center’s survey provides a captivating glimpse into the phenomenon of Americans reporting interactions with deceased relatives. While offering valuable insights into prevalence, influencing factors, and interpretations, it also prompts contemplation about the boundary between the mystical and the scientifically explainable. The findings resonate as a testament to the complexity of human experiences and the mysteries that continue to intrigue and inspire.
