Six Indian cultural and heritage places, including Ganga ghats in Varanasi, temples of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu and Satpura Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh are included in India’s tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Culture Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said that it was a great honour for the country to get the six places enlisted as UNESCO World heritage Sites. In a tweet, he said. The Minister said that the listing of the six places in the tentative UNESCO list was a step ahead before tye final confirmation of any cultural or heritage site.
The Archaeological Survey of India, which is responsible for the conservation and preservation of Indian monuments, submitted the list.
The six sites are namely Satpura Tiger Reserve, Iconic riverfront of the historic city of Varanasi, Megalithic site of Hire Benkal, Maratha Military Architecture in Maharashtra, Bhedaghat-Lametaghat in Narmada Valley- Jabalpur, and temples of Kanchipuram.

Ghats of Varanasi
Varanasi has about 88 Ghats, which are all famous the world over. Almost all the ghats are bathing as well as Pooja ceremony ones. Two of the Ghats are exclusively used as cremation sites. Several of trhe Ghats are related to legends or mythologies.
Satpura Tiger Reserve
The Tiger reserve is located towards the South of River Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. The forest is rich in biodiversity and inhabited by many endangered species. Satpura Tiger Reserve was declared as the first biosphere reserve of Madhya Pradesh in 1999.
Temples of Kanchipuram
Kanchipuram, situated in the southern state of Tamil Nadu is a temple city. The city is dotted with ancient temples that are architectural marvels and a visual treat.
Megalithic site of Hire Benkal
The site is about 2,800-years old. Situated in Hire Benkal in Karnataka, about 400 Megalithic structures spread over the area. . The granite structures are burial monuments that may also have served many ritual purposes.The hillocks of Hirebenkal also contain rock art from the Neolithic period.
Maratha Military Architecture
Twelve forts in Maharashtra dating back to the era of the 17th-century showcase Maratha Architecture at the time of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji. Shivneri (birthplace of Shivaji, Raigad (capital fort rebuilt for the coronation of the Maratha king), Torna (first fort of Maratha empire), Rajgad, Salher-Mulher, Panhala, Pratapgad, Lohagad, Sindhudurg, Padmadurga (Kasa), Vijaydurg and Kolaba are the forts.
These forts depict the Maratha Military Architecture and Guerrilla Warfare.
Bhedaghat-Lametaghat in Narmada Valley
Bhedaghat in Madhya Pradesh is often referred as the Grand Canyon of India. It is situated in Jabalpur district. The place is known for its marble rocks and various morphological forms on either side of the Narmada river which flows through the gorge.
