India Adds Five New Ramsar Sites; Now Stands at 80

In a significant announcement on the eve of World Wetlands Day 2024, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav revealed that India has expanded its count of Ramsar sites to 80, with the addition of five new wetlands. These sites, located in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, contribute to the ecological richness of the country.

With the inclusion of these five wetlands, the total area covered under Ramsar sites in India now stands at 1.33 million hectares, representing a significant increase of 5,523.87 hectares.

WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2024 CELEBRATION

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2024, “Wetlands and Human Wellbeing,” emphasizes the crucial role wetlands play in enhancing human lives. India, in collaboration with the Government of Madhya Pradesh, is organizing the national event at Sirpur Lake, Indore, a Ramsar site designated in 2022. Dr. Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention, is participating in the celebration to be held on February 2, 2024. The event will bring together officials, wetland authority representatives, and site managers to highlight the importance of wetlands in human wellbeing.
