World needs solidarity to combat Coronavirus: UN

With Coronavirus devastating the socio economic frame work of many nations, the United Nations has called for acting together to lessen the impact of the catastrophe.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that coronavirus attacked societies at their core, inflicted the people’s livelihoods and claimed lives. The crisis needed coordinated, inclusive, innovative and decisive policy action from leading economies,he said. He also called for maximum technical and financial support for the poorest and most vulnerable people and countries.

Guterres also cautioned about long term and serious effects on global economy and individual countries.  He said that COVID-19 was the greatest challenge that the United Nations faced after its formation.

The UN Chief said that there was an urgent need for a coordinated health response to overcome the pandemic. He said that testing, tracing, quarantine and treatment should be enhanced all over the globe.

He stressed that developed countries should help the less developed.

In its efforts to tackle the social and economic ramifications, Guterres said that policies should be framed in such a way that it focussed on the most vulnerable. The policies should address the health, unemployment and other sectors to prevent joblessness and bankruptcies.

Noting that priority should be for debt alleviation, The UN Chief said that they were establishing a new multi-partner Trust Fund for COVID19 Response and Recovery.

He said that the world now needed solidarity and “with this solidarity, we can defeat the virus and build a better world,” he said.
