In a historic move aimed to bring financial stability to the citizens in rural areas, India launched the physical distribution of property cards under SVAMITVA scheme. Prime Minister  Narendra Modi launched the distribution of Aadhaar-like property cards under the scheme, which would help rural India to use their property as a financial asset.

It is for the first time that such a large scale exercise involving the most modern means of technology is carried out to benefit millions of rural property owners.

Survey of Villages Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology In Village Areas, in short known as SVAMITVA is the new initiative of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj launched on April 24, 2020. SVAMITVA provides rural people with the right to document their residential properties so that they can use their property for economic purposes.

The scheme will help in streamlining planning and revenue collection in rural areas and ensuring clarity on property rights. It will also help in resolving property related disputes and enable creation of better-quality Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDPs), leveraging the maps created under this programme.

During the launch, Modi said the beneficiaries will have a right, a legal document of owning their houses. The scheme is going to bring historical changes to the villages in the country. He added the country has taken another major step towards an AtmaNirbhar Bharat, as the scheme helps in making rural India self-reliant, he added.
