Samsung sells 1 million Galaxy Fold; Promises to make it cheaper

The good news for global leader Samsung is that it was able to sell 10 lakh units of Galaxy Fold, $ 2000 high-end foldable smart phone, despite the high price tag and initial hiccups.

Then the good news for the mobile users is that the next generation Galaxy Fold 2 will be made cheaper.

Hitting the markets as one of the most interesting phones of 2019, is also one of the most expensive phones. Samsung Electronic’s President Young Sohn announced that they have sold 1,000,000 units of the Galaxy Fold.

In Q1 of 2019, Samsung reportedly sold about 78 million phones. From March 2019 to May 2019, Samsung sold 16 million Galaxy S10s. In comparison, it seems like a very small number of Folds being sold.

Samsung wanted it to be the first-of-its-kind smartphone. It was the first consumer-ready foldable phone to market, even after the months-long delay. Samsung initially wanted to launch the phone in spring 2019, but the first handful of review units began failing after just a few days. Samsung recalled all the samples and set to work revamping the Fold to make the hinge and screen more robust and able to keep particulates from creeping inside. Finally, Samsung released the Galaxy Fold last month for the same $1,980 price it announced in February.

The company is planning a different approach for the next gen and it promises to make it affordable at around $837. That would make it slightly less expensive than recent non-foldable phones like the Note 10. It is expected to be launched at Mobile World Congress in early 2020.
