The Wayanad Government Medical College, which was a long pending demand, is becoming a reality with the Kerala Government on Monday, February 15, approving the creation of 140 new posts for the Medical College.
Health Minister K K Shylaja said that the Cabinet that met on Monday approved 140 posts, including 115 teaching posts, principal and 25 non-teaching posts.
In the last week’s cabinet meeting, the government gave permission for the Mananthavady district hospital to function as the Waynad medical college hospital. With this, Wayanad Medical College will start functioning from the three-storied building constructed near the District Hospital.

The government approved the post of principal, six Professors, 21 Associate Professors, 28 Assistant professors, 27 Senior Residents and 32 Tutor / Junior Resident. The 25 non-teaching posts are Senior Administrative Officer, Accounts Officer, Junior Lab Assistant, CA, Sergeant and others.
The Budget allotted Rs 300 crore through KIFB to start the new medical college in Wayanad district.
Admission
The Health Minister said that about 100 students would get admission at the newly opened Government Medical College at Mananthavady this year if the National Medical Mission approved the institution.
Wayanad district hospital
She also said that all the facilities at the Wayanad district hospital was upgraded for the functioning of the medical college. All basic facilities of a medical college were available at the district hospital, she said.
The Mananthawady district hospital has 500 beds for inpatient treatment. The construction of a multi-purpose block in the district hospital will be completed soon at a cost of Rs 45 crore, she added.
