Step on to a coir mat and disinfect your feet. This is what the Kerala State Coir Corporation has to offer at the time of coronavirus pandemic. Like wearing masks and washing hands, cleaning the feet and footwear is needed to ward off the pathogens. Aiming at preventing the spread of coronavirus through the feet, the Kerala State Coir Corporation Limited launched “COVID Mat”, a custom made disinfecting floor mat.
The Coir Corporation developed the COVID Mats in collaboration with National Coir Research Institute and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology. The liquid disinfectant for the mat was developed by the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology.
The specially designed coir mat is placed in a tray containing the disinfection solution. The tray can be placed in front of houses and offices. People can rub their feet on the mat placed in the tray and then rub the feet on the dry mat placed beside the tray to wipe the wetness.
The Corporation has come up with two types of COVID Mat. One is for households and the other for institutions. The concept is to put fibre mat/BC20 mat in a holding tray made of rubber or plastic. The price ranges from Rs 200 to Rs 800. The mats will be sold through Coir Corporation and Kudumbashree. The new COVID Mat is set to give a fresh lease of life to the coir industry, which is reeling under COVID-19 pandemic.
