Karnataka is numero uno in innovation

Karnataka has emerged numero uno among all the major states in the first innovation ranking by Niti Aayog. Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra came in the second and thirds positions in the ranking, which was published on Friday.

Delhi came in the first place among the Union Territories, the India Innovation Index 2019 said. In the index, Jharkhand has the last place.

Telangana, Haryana, Kerala Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh have all been placed in the top position. The Index also makes it clear that three of the five top states are from Southern India.

Karnataka with a score of 35.65 has topped the ranking in its high performance scores in human capital, knowledge workers, investment and knowledge output.  With respect to North Eastern states, Sikkim came on top of the index.  

The Innovative index has been grouped into Enablers (factors which drive innovation) and Performance ( factors that measure the outcome). Maharashtra with a score of 25.64 came top in enablers index and Karnatka was top in the performance index. In the Human capital index, Tamil Nadu with a score of   49.20 was on the top followed by Kerala, Punjab and Karnataka. As far as investment is concerned, Karnataka topped the index witha score of 31.31 and followed by Maharashtra and Haryana. While Maharshtra was leading the Knowledge workers index, Tamil Nadu had the privilege of being top in Business Environment index.

Since innovation is key to prosperity and growth of a region, measuring the innovative index would help in identifying the areas of development, the report said.  It also said that understanding the level of innovation was important for taking policy decisions as it would help the states in formulating their own policies.

The report points out that the states should identify clusters and strengthen them to make them more innovative. It also says that the states should focus on more research, development and cross sharing of ideas.
