The southern city of Hyderabad is ranked the 16th among the top 20 most surveilled cities in the world, said an annual report published by the UK based Comparitech, which reviews technology services such as anti-virus, VPN and apps..
Out of the 20 cities, 18 are in China. Apart from Hyderabad, the other city that found a place among the top 20 is London. Hyderabad has about three lakh CCTVs for over a crore of population. This means the city has 30 CCTVs per 1,000 people.
The researchers took into account various factors before finalising the list of top surveilled cities. They looked into government reports, police websites and articles in about 150 cities.
With 30 CCTVs per 1,000 people installed in Hyderabad, the crime rate index in the city stood at 43.46.
Taiyuan in China was ranked first among all the cities. It had 4,65,255 CCTV cameras for a population of 3,891,127. The ratio of camera to population was at 119.57 CCTV cameras per 1,000 people.
Meanwhile, china’s capital Beijing was placed in the 5th position. Shanghai, the financial nerve centre of China, is in the 12th position. Wuhan, the reported epicentre of coronavirus, is ranked 23rd in the list. Urumqi, the capital of the restive Xinjiang province, stood at 13th place.
