Visually challenged Haroon Karim from Malappuram district in Kerala has created history afar he wrote the SSLC examination using a laptop without the help of a scribe.
Haroon, a blind student of GVHSS Mankada in Malappuram district wrote the Malayalam examination. It is the first time that computer is sued for writing public examination in the state.
He got special permission from the General Education Department for using laptop. Haroon typed the answers in the computer when an invigilator read out the questions. He had to face several difficulties before the authorities gave the permission. The boy was quoted as saying that it was easy for him to write the exam through the laptop He said that he finished the exam well before the allotted time. And no additional time was availed by him.
He used screen reader software to listen to the answers he wrote during the exam. Haroon studied at a blind school at Mankada till Class 7. But from Class 3, he said started to take notes and exam in the lap top, saying goodbye to Braille.
Haroon said that it was only a small beginning from his side. He opined that that visually challenged children should not be confined to special schools but should have to be brought to the mainstream.
