Wars and attacks on civilians will drive 6.7 million people from their homes by 2026, warns a new Danish Refugee Council (DRC) report. The Global Displacement Forecast Report 2025 projects 4.2 million displacements in 2025, the highest since 2021. Another 2.5 million will flee in 2026.
Sudan will see 2.1 million new displacements, nearly one-third of the global total. Other hotspots include Myanmar, Afghanistan, and DR Congo.
The crisis worsens as wealthy nations slash aid, leaving millions without food, water, and shelter.
SUDAN: THE WORLD’S LARGEST HUMANITARIAN DISASTER
Sudan faces the worst humanitarian crisis, with 12.6 million people already displaced.
By 2026, another 2.1 million Sudanese will be forced to flee, according to the report.
The war-torn nation is also suffering from severe hunger and economic collapse, worsening displacement trends.
MYANMAR’S CIVIL WAR FUELS MASS EXODUS
Myanmar’s multi-front civil war has displaced 3.5 million people so far.
The report forecasts an additional 1.4 million people will flee by the end of 2026.
Nearly 20 million people, or one-third of Myanmar’s population, need urgent humanitarian aid.
AFGHANISTAN, SYRIA, YEMEN, AND DR CONGO ALSO AT RISK
Conflict, economic collapse, and climate change will fuel displacement in several countries:
- Afghanistan: Ongoing instability and economic crisis will force hundreds of thousandsto flee.
- DR Congo: Armed violence and poverty will drive record displacements.
- Syria & Yemen: Years of war will keep millions of people displacedwith no hope of return.
- Venezuela: Economic and political instability will push thousands across borders.
