Geethu makes it first among ordinary people to the Arctic

Warming Antarctic waters, a threat to Ecosystem

 

Geethu Mohandas, a techie from Bangalore, is for creating history by becoming the first woman from India to explore the Arctic pole as part of an expedition for ordinary people to the pole. She would be travelling with 19 other people as part of the Fjallraven polar expedition in which ordinary people from different parts of the world were selected.

The expedition is scheduled from March 30 to April 6. The expedition has been going on since 1997 and is run by Stockholm based clothing company Fjallraven . Geethu Mohandas was selected as per online competition. Hailing from Aluva in Kerala, she said that travelling was her passion ever since she was ten years old. She said that the interest for travel developed in her after attending her first nature camp she was in her fifth class.

Stating that an expedition to Arctic was her dream, Geethu Mohandas said that she was happy to have been chosen through online competition from the world category. People from about 60 countries had participated in the online competition for the expedition.

The 28 year old techie also said that she had to face many hardships during the competition. She said that she had to face cyber bullying by rival campaigners. She said that she faced spammers of supporters of other contestants and had even come across harassment posts. She also said that there were even offers of money for withdrawing from the competition.

After moving to Bengaluru in 2015 for employment, she said that she had started a travel group with the theme of responsible and sustainable tourism. She had already conducted more than 100 trips that include international trips.
