“Despite the Fog (Nonostante La Nebbia)”, directed by GoranPaskaljevic, will open the 50tth International Film Festival of India. This will be the Italian film’s Asian premier.
The film tells the story of Paolo, owner of a restaurant in a small town in the Roman province, who is returning home after work on a rainy evening. On the way, he comes across a child who is huddled in the cold and decided to take him to his home. Mohammed, the child is a refugee who had lost his parents on his way to Italy on a rubber boat. When the boy was brought home, Paolo’s wife is a bit doubtful and hesitant at the beginning. However, she changes her mind later and allows him to be the guest for the night. Later she is seen to keep Mohammed at her home despite opposition from many quarters.
One of Europe’s most respected directors, GoranPaskaljevic was born in Belgrade). He started his career at the Prague School of Cinema (FAMU). He has 30 documentaries and 18 feature films to his credit. He was also an acclaimed film maker and his films has been screened at international film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto and San Sebastian.
He was marked as one of the one of the world’s top five directors in 2001 by Variety International Film Guide. In 2008, the Museum of Modern Art, New York , and in 2010, the British Film Institute presented a full retrospective of his feature films and also published a monograph in English about his works. He was also decorated with the Officier des Arts et des Lettres, the most important French decoration in the field of culture.
