Rented Rebuild Kerala building to come under the scanner

The controversial complex near the secretariat in which the government is renting space for Rebuild Kerala is likely to come under the scanner with a fresh probe to be initiated against the alleged misuse of the said land.

Though former revenue secretary’s report has given a clean chit to the said property of the Law Academy near the secretariat, a fresh probe is likely to be initiated in the wake of the recent controversies, highly placed sources said.

The sources said that the former secretary in the report has only said he did not see prima facie any illegality in development of the property but has called on the Tax and the financial department to further inquire into the issue. Taking this into consideration, the controversial land and Calsar Heather building, which has been now rented for Rebuild Kerala, will once again be probed, the sources said.

They also alleged that the former secretary’s report was not comprehensive and conclusive.  The revenue department itself has doubts over the report when looking into the alleged controversies that the former revenue secretary had landed up in recent times, they said. Several of the orders issued in his last days in office have become controversial. The recent one was related to regularisation of reclaimed paddy field in Kunnathunadu, Kochi.

IWhen taking into account all the developments, the officials said that they doubted if the report was genuine. As such, a fresh probe will only bring out the reality, they added.

The Law Academy along with Heather Builders had constructed the building, which is alleged to have built violating the existing rules. It was alleged that the land where the building stands was given to the Academy for educational purposes only.

The sources said that the finance as well as the taxes department is yet to present a report on the questions raised in the revenue secretary’s report. Moreover, they said that the registration department also had not submitted the report regarding all the properties of the academy.

The sources said that there was much political pressure on the side of officials in taking up any inquiry as the ruling CPM is closely linked with the family of the law academy members.
