Indian Navy to be armed with Russian Kamov- 31 choppers

Indian Navy will be getting Kamov – 31 choppers from Russia as part of strengthening its defence against aerial threats. The government last week gave the final nod for purchasing ten Kamov – 31 at a cost of about Rs 3600 crore.

The Defence Ministry has cleared the proposal of buying these choppers that would add to the strength of the Navy. The decision is reported to have been taken at a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council that was chaired by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The Navy is already having a fleet of 12 Kamov – 31 which add to the destroyers and air craft carriers. Apart from the force also has a fleet of Russian Kamov – 28 for the submarine warfare. These were brought in 1980s.

The Choppers are built by JSC Kamov, a rotorcraft company in Russia.
