Amidst a world where approximately 2.6 billion people still lack internet access, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is spearheading a monumental effort to bridge the global digital divide. Recognizing that telecommunications infrastructure is pivotal for fostering connectivity and driving digital transformation, the ITU has called for a staggering $100 billion in investments by 2026. This initiative aims to extend universal, meaningful connectivity and sustainable digital transformation to every corner of the globe.
PARTNER2CONNECT
ITU’s ambitious goal received a significant boost with the launch of Partner2Connect in 2021, garnering support from over 400 organizations worldwide. These commitments, totaling over $46 billion, represent a shared vision to provide accessible and affordable connectivity to millions of individuals across the globe.
At the forefront of this movement is the mobile phone industry, which has pledged over $9 billion towards connecting the unconnected. Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin emphasized the industry’s crucial role in achieving universal meaningful connectivity. Fresh investments from leading companies such as e&, China Telecom, Ooredoo, and VEON signal a strong industry commitment to ITU’s mission of connecting the world.
SIGNIFICANT STRIDES
These investments are poised to make significant strides across regions, including the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Efforts will focus on providing accessible and affordable network connectivity and digital services, reaching over 80 million people in remote villages across China, and supporting infrastructure development in Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts.
ITU’s impact extends beyond financial commitments, with the organization now boasting over 1,000 industry, academia, and organizational members in addition to its 193 Member States. This multistakeholder collaboration model underscores ITU’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and building an inclusive, safe, and sustainable digital future for all.
As ITU continues to drive efforts to connect remote communities and underserved populations worldwide, the momentum towards achieving universal connectivity grows stronger. With unprecedented industry support and collaborative partnerships, the vision of a fully connected world is within reach, promising opportunities for socio-economic empowerment and development on a global scale.
